Ericsson this week was named a Thomson Reuters 2011 Top 100 Global Innovator, recognizing its achievements as one of the world’s most innovative companies. The program, an initiative issued by the IP Solutions business of Thomson Reuters, providers of intelligent intellectual property solutions and information, analyzes patent data and related metrics in a proprietary methodology to identify the most influential organizations globally.
The Thomson Reuters 2011 Top Global Innovators program evaluates innovation performance according to companies that invent on a significant scale, work on developments that are acknowledged as innovative by others around the world, and whose inventions are globally protected due to their importance.
Kasim Alfalahi, Chief IPR Officer and head of Patent Portfolio and Licensing at Ericsson says: “It is encouraging to receive such an acknowledgment on our extensive research and the related work to develop intellectual property rights. Ericsson has been leading global standardization in telecom, making sure our innovations are available for developing a global mass market for the ICT industry which supports business, society and people.”
With some 27,000 patents, Ericsson is the largest holder of standard-essential patents for mobile communication. Our unrivalled patent portfolio covers 2G, 3G and 4G technologies, and we are a net receiver of licensing royalties with more than 90 patent-licensing agreements in place. Ericsson invested 30 billion SEK, approximately 15 percent of total sales into R&D in 2010.
Thomson Reuters Derwent World Patents Index® (DWPI), Derwent Patents Citations Index™, Quadrilateral Patent Index™, and Thomson Innovation®, the IP and intelligence collaboration platform were used to carefully analyze patent data for the Thomson Reuters 2011 Top 100 Global Innovators program. Companies do not apply, and winners do not pay, to receive this honor.
“Innovation is a means of growth and prosperity for companies and nations struggling to overcome sluggish economies and achieve competitive advantage,” said David Brown, president of the IP Solutions business of Thomson Reuters. “We salute the Thomson Reuters 2011 Top 100 Global Innovator companies and their leaders for the innovative spirit they foster and their commitment to protecting intellectual assets.”
