CITY OF RICHARDSON CELEBRATES MAJOR MILESTONES IN DOWNTOWN REVITALIZATION WITH OPENING OF BELT + MAIN DEVELOPMENT AND INTERURBAN COMMON

April 26, 2025

The City of Richardson today celebrated the official opening of two transformative projects in the heart of the Downtown Neighborhood and The CORE District: the Belt + Main mixed-use development and Interurban Common. Together, these projects mark major milestones in the City’s ongoing efforts to revitalize its historic downtown into a vibrant, walkable urban center.

At a joint ribbon-cutting ceremony held this morning with City officials, project partners, and community members marked the importance of both additions and how the projects reflect the City’s long-term vision for The CORE District, a vision first set into motion with the adoption of downtown redevelopment ordinances in 2015 and 2016.

“Belt + Main and Interurban Common are not just new additions to the landscape, they are part of a deliberate, decade-long effort to reimagine and renew Downtown Richardson,” said Richardson Mayor Bob Dubey. “Today’s openings represent significant progress toward creating a dynamic destination for businesses, residents, and visitors alike.”

The Belt + Main development, built in partnership with Catalyst Urban Development, is the first transformative mixed-use residential and retail project in The CORE District. Adjacent to the new development, Interurban Common offers a pedestrian-friendly open space that enhances walkability, connectivity, and quality of life. Designed with ties to the citywide trail system and equipped with modern urban amenities, Interurban Common represents the City’s continued commitment to creating spaces that attract people and foster community engagement.

“These investments build on years of strategic planning, infrastructure upgrades, property acquisitions, and public-private collaboration,” said City Manager Don Magner. “They are an example

of how foundational improvements, both visible and behind the scenes, are laying the groundwork for long-term success in The CORE District.”

Ongoing Revitalization Investments in The CORE District

Since 2016, the City has advanced numerous projects to support downtown revitalization, including the reconstruction of Main Street, road and drainage improvements, new parking solutions, CORE District branding initiatives, and the launch of vibrant community events such as Culture in The CORE, Light Up Lockwood, and Lunar New Year celebrations. Ongoing investments, like the McKinney Street reconstruction and Phase 2 of Main Street improvements, continue to reinforce the City's commitment to its vision.

The CORE District’s progress has already attracted new businesses, innovative service concepts, and major development activity, reflecting growing interest and momentum across the area.

About The CORE District

The CORE District, composed of the Chinatown, Downtown, Heights, Interurban, and Lockwood neighborhoods, is Richardson’s epicenter of community, culture, commerce, and cuisine. It is a signature entertainment center that hosts the annual Lunar New Year, and Culture in The CORE events. With places to live, work, and play, and with a wide variety of independently owned and operated small businesses, The CORE District is the eclectic heart of Richardson.
